Boggs Retires
When I first met Kay Boggs at her Brown Township farmhouse a few years ago I had come to interview her about DCA’s early years and the organization’s successful fight against efforts to dam Big Darby.
Kay began by warning me: "My memory isn’t so good anymore"; but she then proceeded to treat me to many detailed memories of how the fledgling DCA fought against Columbus officials and the Army Corps of Engineers, both of whom wanted to dam Darby. After the dams were defeated, DCA struggled to win Darby Scenic River status, fighting against powerful interests in Columbus and at the statehouse.
Kay became President of DCA in 1974, and has been an invaluable Darby advocate for almost three decades. With the expiration of her trustee term last year she has decided to step down.
Kay is truly a "Hero of the Darby." Without the activism of Kay and others—at a time when environmental activism was not common in central Ohio—Darby would likely be no different than many other Ohio streams, polluted and dammed. All who have enjoyed the beauty of Darby Creek owe Kay Boggs a hearty thank you!
